Childrens Day in Japan and Koinobori Song
May 5 is Japans national holiday known as, Kodomo no hi Ã¥ ä ¾âºÃ£ ®Ã¦â" ¥ (Childrens day). It is a day to celebrate the health and happiness of children. Until 1948, it was called, Tango no Sekku (ç « ¯Ã¥ Ë㠮ç ¯â¬Ã¥ ¥), and only honored boys. Although this holiday became known as, Childrens Day, many Japanese still consider it a Boys Festival. On the other hand, Hinamatsuri (㠲㠪ç ¥ ãâÅ ), which falls on March 3rd, is a day to celebrate girls. Childrens Day Families with boys fly, Koinobori é ¯â°Ã£ ®Ã£ ¼Ã£âÅ (carp-shaped streamers), to express the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong. The carp is a symbol of strength, courage, and success. In a Chinese legend, a carp swam upstream to become a dragon. The Japanese proverb, Koi no takinobori (é ¯â°Ã£ ®Ã¦ » ç⢠»Ã£âÅ , Kois waterfall climbing), means, to succeed vigorously in life. Warrior dolls and warrior helmets called, Gogatsu-ningyou, are also displayed in a boys house. Kashiwamochi is one of the traditional foods that are eaten on this day. It is a steamed rice cake with sweet beans inside and is wrapped in an oak leaf. Another traditional food is, chimaki, which is a dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves. On Childrens Day, there is a custom to take a shoubu-yu (a bath with floating shoubu leaves). Shoubu (è â"è⠲) is a type of iris. It has long leaves that resemble swords. Why the bath with shoubu? It is because shoubu is believed to promote good health and to ward off evil. It is also hung under the eaves of homes to drive away evil spirits. Shoubu (Ã¥ °Å¡Ã¦ ¦) also means, materialism, warlike spirit, when using different kanji characters. Koinobori Song There is a childrens song called, Koinobori, that is often sung during this time of the year. Here are the lyrics in romaji and Japanese. There is an important lesson to learn regarding terms used for Japanese family members. Different terms are used for family members depending on whether the person referred to is part of the speakers own family or not. Also, there are terms for directly addressing members of the speakers family. For example, lets look at the word father. When referring to someones father, otousan is used. When referring your own father, chichi is used. However, when addressing your father, otousan or papa is used. Anata no otousan wa se ga takai desu ne. ã â㠪㠟㠮ã Å Ã§Ë ¶Ã£ â¢Ã£ââ㠯èÆ'Å'ã Å'é «Ëã â㠧ã â¢Ã£ ãâ¬â--- Your father is tall, isnt he?Watashi no chichi wa takushii no untenshu desu. ç § ã ®Ã§Ë ¶Ã£ ¯Ã£â ¿Ã£â ¯Ã£â ·Ã£Æ' ¼Ã£ ®Ã© â¹Ã¨ » ¢Ã¦â°â¹Ã£ §Ã£ â¢Ã£â¬â--- My father is a taxi driver.Otousan, hayaku kite! ã Å Ã§Ë ¶Ã£ â¢Ã£ââã⬠æâ" ©Ã£ æ ¥Ã£ ¦--- Dad, come quickly! Grammar Yori ãâËãâÅ is a particle and is used when comparing things. It translates into than. In the song, Koinobori is the topic of the sentence (the order is changed because of the rhyme), therefore, koinobori wa yane yori takai desu é ¯â°Ã£ ®Ã£ ¼Ã£âŠã ¯Ã¥ ±â¹Ã¦ ¹Ã£âËãâŠé «Ëã â㠧ã ⢠is a common order for this sentence. It means the koinobori is higher than the roof. The suffix ~tachi is added to make the plural form of personal pronouns. For example: watashi-tachi, anata-tachi or boku-tachi. It can also be added to some other nouns, such as kodomo-tachi (children). ~sou ni is an adverb form of ~ sou da. ~ sou da means, it appears. Kare wa totemo genki sou desu. Sexism is ââ¬Å"the belief that women are weaker, less intelligent, and less important than menâ⬠(Longman, 1995).Sexism is defined ââ¬Å"as a negative attitude or discriminatory behavior based on the presumed inferiority or difference of women as a groupâ⬠(Cameron, 2001).Cornell (as cited in Trujillo, 1991, p. 290) defines hegemonic masculinity as ââ¬Å"the culturally idealized form of masculine characterâ⬠which underlines ââ¬Å"the connecting of masculinity to toughness and competitivenessâ⬠and ââ¬Å"the subordination of women.â⬠Cornell claims that ââ¬Å"such an idealized form of masculinity becomes hegemonic when it is widely accepted in a culture and when that acceptance reinforces the dominant gender ideology of the cultureâ⬠(pp. 290-291). Lady Chatterleys Lover is renowned for its supposed obscenity and daring nature. Analysis Of Van Gogh s The Postman Joseph Roulin
Dear friend Dolcy, I am visiting the city of Arles located in the southwestern France. The city is prominent for the masterpiece ââ¬Å"The Postman Joseph Roulinâ⬠painted by Van Gogh in the early August of 1888. Van Gogh painting has influenced the contemporarily art in the twenty century. In addition, the artist was a Post-Impressionist, with the ability to seize the intensity of emotion and the beauty in his artwork. I really appreciate Van Gogh portraits. Due to that, I want to discover the city of ââ¬Å"The postman Joseph Roulinâ⬠which seduced the artist feelings. There is always a mystery behind each masterpiece in which only the artist detains the secret and the best explanation. However, according to my perception, Van Gogh displayed a portrait of a fervent postman to immortalize the only man who was close to him regardless how others seen him due to his mental disorder. In the short story, Desireeââ¬â¢s Baby, Kate Chopin there is a sense of karma and consequences that are used in the story wrote that. The story explores the problem of a manââ¬â¢s pride overcoming the love he has for his wife and race. In the short story, Desireeââ¬â¢s baby by Kate Chopin the character Armand Aubigny is racist, in denial and mean. In the story, Armand is a slave owner in Louisiana. In addition, the historical background puts race and heritage into the story as the key points to be seen and understood. The theory that I am applying in my story is that of Cultural Studies. The cultural studies theory concentrates on how and the way a particular subject relates to a social class, ideology, gender, ethnicity, and nationality. Armandâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As master of the LAbri plantation, he is a strict taskmaster who treats the slaves harshlyââ¬âso much so, the narrator says, that the ââ¬Å"negroes had forgotten how to be gay.â⬠As a husband, Armand clearly rules the home. ââ¬Å"When he frowned, Desiree trembled,â⬠the narrator observes. ââ¬Å"When he smiled, she asked no greater blessing of God.â⬠Although his manner softens after the child is born, his demeanor remains in question. As Desiree observes, ââ¬Å"Armand is the proudest father in the parish, I believe, chiefly because it is a boy, to bear his name; though he says not,ââ¬âthat he would have loved a girl as well. But I know it isnt true.â⬠In other words, Armand judges the worth of the child according to its gender in addition to its race. A male meant that the proud Aubigny name and aristocratic heritage would endure, perhaps for many generations. However, when Armand discovers that the child has Negro blood, he becomes sullen and cruel, and he makes it known that his wife and child are no longer welcome at LAbri. He even tries to erase their memory by burning all their clothing and household items. Race is the second major issue in the short story besides pride. Since Armand figured that, he knew his past and who he actually was and he assumed that Desiree was the reason why their baby is mixed. In addition, because of the fact that Desiree was adopted and did not know what her ethnicity was Armand felt like her race,
A Leap of Faith free essay sample
I am in my rock climbing class climbing up a thirty foot pole to do something called ââ¬Å"The Leap of Faith.â⬠I have to jump from the pole and grab a trapeze that hangs several feet away. I am short. I do not think I can reach it. What made me think this class was the appropriate way of pushing myself out of my comfort zone? I am standing up on the pole now, trying to distribute my weight evenly between my feet which barely fit within the poleââ¬â¢s diameter. I glance down and the ground seems to move away from me making my potential drop distance look exponentially larger. I am afraid of heights. I look away. Maybe if I focus on a point on the horizon, I can take my mind off the height. The Colorado wind hits my back, threatening to push me over the edge if I do not jump soon. We will write a custom essay sample on A Leap of Faith or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page I have been up here for several minutes wondering when I will get the second of courage I need to jump. I am strapped into a harness for safety and my classmates hold the ropes that are supposed to save me if I miss. But what if they mess it up? From the ground, my teacher screams at me to jump, and I feel like yelling profanities back at him. I do not want to jump to my potential death. I could end up paraplegic for life. I want to climb down, but something tingles inside of me. The only thing worse than jumping from the pole and missing, is climbing down and giving up. I stare at the trapeze. What if my classmates do not catch me? What if they do? I jump. There is a moment mid-jump, when I feel as though time slows down. I am flying through the air, reaching my arms out for the trapeze. It is right there; I can grab it. I can. I miss and fall. I am going to miss my family. I am caught safely on the ropes by my classmates and I am filled with a sort of overwhelming pride. I stood face to face with a challenge and I accepted it. Now I cannot wait to try it again. My family was born and reared in Puerto Rico. I was born there and when I was eight, I moved to Colorado. My parents took a chance in moving to Colorado. They knew that the United States would provide better academic opportunities for me. They also knew that the move could be traumatic for me. Language and cultural barriers could prove to be obstacles that would make the entire move be counterproductive. I could be seriously frustrated because I did not understand or because I did not excel as well as I was used to. I could have been bullied or teased by the other kids because I had an accent and made countless mistakes when I talked. I could have had an impatient teacher who did not want to wait for me to understand what was going on. My parents took a risk and none of those things ever happened. I did not care how many times I butchered a wordââ¬â¢s pronunciation or spelling. I kept trying anyway. Buk. Buuk. Book. I would try and try again. My classmates did not make fun of me because I spoke differently; in fact, they seemed to like me for it. My teacher took on the challenge of having a student who could not speak English and made sure I had every tool I needed to succeed, including the proper encouragement. My third grade year was not anything less than a blessing. I took a chance in seventh grade and tried tennis. I had never held a racket before. I can proudly say that there were others worse than I. By freshman year, I had made the varsity team. By my junior year, the team had voted me captain. I also took Rocky Mountain High which is a rock climbing class, and the sole purpose of my taking it was to conquer my fears, in this case, a fear of heights. I ended up learning much more. I learned team work, I learned friendship, and most important, I learned trust. Now, I am making my way up another pole getting ready for my next jump. I am fighting for a chance to go to the college of my dreams. My effort and hard work have paid off. I have realized how big an impact a little risk can have. There is one thing that has primarily made me who I am. I have learned to acknowledge that sometimes in life you have to take a Leap of Faith.
The Portal free essay sample
It was dark, complete pitch darkness. There were no light, no visible signs of mundane entities. I was alone, just standing there, in that isolated place I like to call the portal of shadows. In the portal of shadows, you play a game. If you manage to get the light you survive, and if you donââ¬â¢t your corpse just rots there, insignificant and insubstantive. The light will come to you, if you keep standing, thinking and pondering over your life. I was devoid of all thoughts. Anything ideas that come to my mind just disappeared like I had amnesia. I was not afraid of death as knew that death is just the beginning of another fantastic journey. As I was giving up hope, I looked at my right palm. Somehow, a chess pawn had manifested itself there. It reminded me of the many games of chess I had played. The first time was with my mother when I was eight. We will write a custom essay sample on The Portal or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page For some reason, my mother kept on winning and I had suffered a total of 46 losses. I assured myself that I was about to win the next one despite the superior intellect my mother had compared to mine. I decided to focus all my attention on a pawn with a blue etches at its globe, at the far right. I observed its dynamic movement throughout the game and always protected that one pawn despite all odds, even going on to sacrifice a queen to save it. The pawn was finally at the second last row in the enemyââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"territoryâ⬠. I was elated with my achievement. One more row and I could turn that pawn into a magnificent rook and by some miracle win the game. However, my mom just said ââ¬Å"check-mateâ⬠and moved her queen directly facing my king. I just answered ââ¬Å"So what, Iââ¬â¢ll just turn my pawn into a king in the next turn.â⬠She burst out laughing and said in her mellifluous voice and genial look on her face, ââ¬Å"Very well, you won at last Rahim.â⠬ I came back to the portal, thwarted from enjoying another few moments of life. The same pawn was in my hands. It had those same globe with the blue etches. My heart started to fill with melancholy and I dropped it down into the deep black abyss I was standing upon. That was when the string of profound and significant memories in my life started to unravel in my brain. Dreams, experiences, thoughts and actions all convoluted together and hit me back at once. But one single entity among these surpassed everything: Dreams. I saw my aspirations to be an astronaut, a French cook, the mayor of a city and finally a doctor. I was very much like the pawn, wanting to be greater, wanting to have a better future than the meager one that I had now. I remembered my oath to not let anyone I love die and my determination to defeat death. I was not about be sacrificed like those other average pawns on the board. I would surpass every other piece in the board to become the grand champion. None o f these dreams might come true. Maybe I would just perish with my foolish ideologies and views and be left in the darkness, having lived my life with no purpose. Then I saw a speck of light coming towards the unfamiliar grounds I was treading. Soon it was glittering and hovering over my head. I extended my rough arms to try to touch the tiny star and closed my eyes, my brain devoid of all emotions and mundane thoughts. I felt a tingling in the hand I caught the star with and opened my eyelids. The light was back and I realized that I was just sitting under a tree with a novel in my left hand. Flabbergasted, I looked into my opened right palm. There stood a king, almighty and impregnable. There were faint, yet distinguishable blue etches travelling down its crown. The light was back in my eyes and it almost blinded me.
